when i first realized i was black

I cannot remember when I exactly and truly realized I was black. I grew up in a sheltered household. My parents did not want to expose my sister and I to the cruelties that life held or that people possessed. The neighborhood that I grew up in and still reside in consists of upper-middle class African – Americans. Many of the kids that grew up there lived pretty sheltered lives. All of the kids knew each other because we all went to the same schools. The schools I went to were always predominantly black. I live in the southeast section of DeKalb County, which is comprised of families where the household income is over $100,000. The county I live in is one of the thirteen metro Atlanta counties. My social upbringing was based on the black culture. All of my friends were black, however, I have had the opportunity to mix with white kids.
