“What the meaning of philosophy is to me”


Philosophy is abstract thinking about abstract things. “Philosophy, which literally means the love of wisdom, begins with wonder about our most basic beliefs. Its goal is to help us achieve autonomy (the sovereignty of reason in the sphere of morals) by making us more aware of our own beliefs and encouraging us to reason and think through issues for ourselves” (Ch. 1, 40). Humans generally tend not to study philosophy because it is not an exact science like math, biology, or history. There is a certain kind of fear in humans when it comes to thinking philosophically, or critically. To successfully be a philosopher one requires great knowledge and understanding of the critical world around us. However, knowledge is not considered to be a belief unless it is true. True knowledge is achieved by withstanding the test of time. An example of true knowledge is the fact that there is change will never change. The idea of change is...
