What is the importance of Walsh's presentation of the inquision and Fra Murta in Kbowledge of Angels?

At the time Fra Murta enters the novel in chapter 23, we
find that the two outsiders, Palinor and Amara, have become
more settled into their different lifestyles within the
island of Grandinsula. Palinor has been excepted as an
atheist by Beneditx and Severo, and as a man with a high moral standing. They consider him a gentleman and a great friend,something which their strong religious beliefs should stop them from doing. Saying this, they are both still very desperate to convert Palinor from his stubborn religious standing. Amara has developed from the ‘wolf-girl’, with very animalistic characteristics, to a young girl who can communicate well and interact with other human-beings. This is a huge achievement for her, and couldn’t be done without the caring assistance of Josefa.
