What is the function of the character of the Inspector?

In the play ‘An Inspector Calls’, the main character is the Inspector. He is the one who gets all of the information out of the other characters. Throughout the play he is completely in control to ensure that he gathers all the information that he needs from the other characters in order to piece together the story of Eva Smith’s life before she committed suicide. As well as all this, he also tries to teach the other characters a lesson about being more aware of the people around them and to take more responsibility for their actions.

The Inspector is a very strong and dominant character. We can observe this right throughout the play, from the moment the Inspector appears. To quote the play, it says “The Inspector need not be a big man but he creates at once an impression of massiveness, solidity and purposefulness”.
