What is the difference between Realism and Naturalism?

In the Nineteenth century, many changes began to take place. New ideas began to circulate. “Colonial empires were created and vast sections of the globe opened up forcibly to Western trade.” (Lawall 835) All over Europe, the middle class had established their rule. Many political changes took place, which led to economic and social changes during this time period. Advances in industry and transportation were among these changes. “The existence of widespread wealth and prosperity is undeniable, although it coexisted with wretched living conditions and other hardships of the early factory workers, many of them women.” (Lawall 835) All of these things changed the outlook people had. These discoveries led to more realistic and scientific outlooks on things, therefore giving rise to ideas such as Realism and Naturalism.
