What is Love?
The novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God” expresses many different viewpoints on love and life in general. Janie, a beautiful, caring, and intelligent, black woman is the main character. She is raised in West Florida alone by her strict grandmother, who encourages her to marry off right away, at the early age of 16. Without even knowing Logan, a wealthy farmer who owns 60 acres of land, she takes her grandmother’s advice and marries him immediately. She was tired of being alone, and she knew that husbands and wives always loved eachother, so she figured that getting married would make love, and she would grow to love Logan. At her young age, and with what she had been taught and exposed to, it was not expected of her to know any better. Janie learns shortly after that marriage does not make love, when she realizes she is not attracted to Logan, in any way, shape, or form.
