What is a Leader

What is the definition of a leader? Someone who takes the initiative to step up and take responsibility or someone who leads the society through a hard time? Franklin D. Roosevelt had all of these qualities and more. Roosevelt was an electoral leader that made many contributions, through his leadership, to society during his reign as president.
“Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born at Hyde Park, New York on January 30, 1882. He was an only child of James and Sara Delano Roosevelt.” (Encarta)
Franklin’s first political position was New York’s State Senate in 1910. He then was appointed to the post of assistant secretary of the Navy during World War I. Roosevelt was later elected to be the Governor of New York, where he was first seen as a strong leader. He fought for control of the Saint Lawrence River waterpower resource by the state rather than private utilities (Encarta). Out of this struggle, came Roosevelt’s presidential nomination.
