What elements of the sublime are contained in romatic poetry?
At this period in history (1780-1850) Britain was undergoing radical changes in society, social and political. There was a revolution going on in France and then there was a war between Britain and France in 1793. So it would be unfair to view the poets of this time as complete idealists, they had been through so many hard changes that it would be easy to think of them as escapists, trying to create a world that does not exist. But these men where not without a backbone or strong morals of their own. In 1875 Coleridge lectured against Government war policy and was the target of Government spying. Wordsworth was driven out of the village where he lived because of his radical politics.
