What does your room say about you?

With the average American always wanting more, bigger and more expensive seems to be replacing personal and meaningful. In Joan Kron’s essay “The Semiotics of Home Décor” she makes us take a closer look at why we really love the things in our home. All these things we own might not mean much to anyone else, but to their owners it’s a different story. These items we own shape us as people. They make us unique and special. Without them we would all be the same and to us they are priceless.

I spent every penny I had saved up on a sound system for my car. Two twelve inch subwoofers, brand new speakers and the newest deck. I guess it’s a status symbol, although I don’t go out of my way to brag about it I do feel proud when someone makes a comment. But more than that, it’s for me, and my immense enjoyment.
