What does Conard mean by Heart of Darkness Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad was set during the peak of Belgium Imperialism. Within the tale there are three main pervading darkness, the darkness of Africa, Europe and one’s self. Conrad reveals the good and evil, which is contained within one’s soul. As Marlow ‘penetrates’ deep inside the ‘impenetrable’ Africa we learn of the heart of darkness, which is contained in every man. The ‘darkness’ of Africa is shown throughout the book as Conrad builds an unhealthy ‘darkness’. At every turn he sees evil lurking, the deadly Congo ‘snakes’ to link itself with the sea and all other rivers of ‘darkness’. Contrary to the Thames, which is seen as a pathway leading to and from the civilized world. Conrad is creating a luminous glow around London and the river to symbolize its greatness and its civilized society. Nowhere does he make London and its surroundings seem dark and alarming.
