The Westward Expansion
The Lewis and Clark Expedition was one of the most exciting times in the history of the United
States. In 1804-06, Louis and Clark carried the destiny of our young nation westward from the
Mississippi across thousands of miles of rugged unknown land to the Pacific Ocean. This great
accomplishment sparked the imagination of the American people and made them feel the need to explore
more of the continent on which they lived. Lewis and Clark accepted the challenges, and paved the way
for many other Americans towards Westward Expansion. In the outlook of its great achievements, the
expedition is one of the greatest explorations of the world.
Meriwether Lewis was born August 18, 1774, near Charlottesville, Virginia(Snyder, p.10).
Lewis joined the militia in 1794 and made his way to Ensign, where during this militia he was attached to
the sublegion of General "Mad Anthony" Wayne commanded by Lieutenant William Clark. William
