The Trumpeter of Krakow Ballad


oland was attacked, the spring of 1241
By the Tartars, who had a thirst to kill
The innocent people, everyone
But the trumpeter refused to sit still
In the church, he sounded the Heynal at every hour
The song someone once wrote
The Tartars killed him, with all their power
And he ended on a broken note
Then in the summer of 1461,
The Charnetski’s left their Ukrainian home.
There was Andrew, his wife, and Joseph, their son
They traveled to Poland and began to roam
They met a stranger on the road,
Who wanted to buy their only possession.
For the pumpkin, he offered its weight in gold,
But Andrew refused and continued his progression
When the family reached Poland, their destination
They learned their family had been killed
They knew no one else in the nation,
All alone, but no tears were spilled
For Joseph saved two people from a canine,
They alchemist Kreutz, and Elzbietka, his neice
They offered him a room for being so kind
