Waris Dirie's Desert Dawn

The novel, ?Desert Flower: the extraordinary journey of a desert nomad?, was written by Waris Dirie with assistant from Cathleen Miller. It is a non-fiction autobiography detailing the inspirational life of Waris, a nomadic Somali.

Set in the extreme heat in the Somaliland desert with lions, hyenas and camels, it is a mesmerizing read. The red dusty plains cover the vast majority of poverty stricken Somalia. The action takes place throughout the desert, the sickening procedure, female genital mutilation just under a nearby small tree. Waris, only a young teenager, runs away from home into the busy hustle and bustle city of Mogadishu to stay with an aunt.
