In this book, Conrad shows that colonism results in selfishness and is demonstrated through greed. Conrad shows this through the “Russian” when he says that “I had a small lot of ivory” and that his boss Kurtz said that “he would shoot [the Russian] unless [he] gave him the ivory” (Conrad, 128). In that example, Kurtz was a character that was sent by the British Company to colonize Congo and to send shipments of ivory back to Europe. But this attempt to colonize Congo turned him mad (evil) with greed. Another example of greed is shown when Conrad says, through the character of the accountant, that the best way to get rid of their competition in the ivory business is to “get [Kurtz] hanged” since “anything can be done in this country” (Conrad, 91).
