After his father Sviatoslav’s death Vladimir battled with his two brothers, Yaropolk and Oleg, for the succession to the throne. In around 980, he defeated his brothers and became grand duke of Kiev. During his reign he conquered and united far-off Slavic tribes and waged successful wars on the Lithuanians, the Bulgars, and the Byzantines in Crimea. From Paganism, he converted to Christianity, influenced by the political and economic advantages of an alliance with Byzantium. His decision also reflected his close personal ties with Constantinople, which controlled trade regions in the Black Sea.
Vladimir's greatest achievement dealt with religion. Until the end of the 10th century almost all Slavic tribes were pagans and believed in many different gods. In 988, Saint Vladimir decided to convert the entire population of Kievan Rus to the Greek Orthodox faith, with this great event, the city became the leading religious center in Kievan Rus.
