Violence is a serious problem America is faced with. Anxiety over violence is steadily mounting as a result of the rising crime rate. There are many causes and forms of violence, from domestic disputes to drive-by shootings. By knowing what causes violence, we will be able to stop it before it starts. Many different things contribute to our society’s high rate of violence, such as the drug trade, broken families, and even the criminal justice system.
The guns that crack dealers carry the way business men carry briefcases shows how the drug trade is a big contributor to violent crime. Barbour and Swisher indicate that Jeffery Fagan, a professor of criminal justice at Rutgers University claims “guns multiplied right after crack” (114).
