Short stories written in Victorian times, tend to be very long, this is because in Victorian times, stories were the main source of entertainment in the household and they were often read aloud as a great source of entertainment. The theme of the supernatural obviously proved to be very popular in the pre 20th century. Maybe this was because, as now even in modern times, the theme of the supernatural and/or how it is portrayed on T.V., in the cinema, in books, or magazines etc. Appeals to many different audiences. The fact that these types of stories, film etc, grip the imagination of the reader and make them want to read on is probly why they became and still are so popular.
