The flapper. Al Capone. Mass-consumerism.. Prohibition. Automobiles. Through these widely-known images, the colorful decade of the 1920s still resonates among generations that never experienced it. It was creative, dangerous, proud, and above all, rich. Undoubtedly characterized as a period of great prosperity and optimism, it was as if the war had assured the Americans of what they had suspected all along- they were the most powerful and important people in the world. It was with this attitude that the nation delved into a society of hedonism and prosperity. Yet the image of 1920s hid dark conflicts that were brewing under the surface- problems such as agricultural depression, rising intolerance and isolationism, stagnation in the old industries, gang crime, over-produc...
