Document Analysis

Document A- Document A, written by Congressman Robert Toombs of Georgia shows a
point of view supporting the separation of the South from the Union. It is telling us that
there was a great division between those wanting to separate and those who wanted to
remain together. It brings up the issue of having the duty to protect your rights. In this
case, the right of the South to decide their position on slavery. It was the nation as a
whole that won their independence from Britain and they should be able to enjoy the
rights that they won without the North invading these rights by restricting slavery.
Toombs was biased in the way that he was willing to stake his entire being on the right to
have slavery. He was influenced by the fact that he lived in Georgia and so as a resident
of that Southern state, he profited from the labor of the slaves. His wealth came from this
source and so it would be in his best interest to defend slavery. As a supporter of the
