Up in Smoke

Thousands of acres of the tropical rainforest are being ruined everyday. As a consequence of mining, logging, and many other industries, the environment is being torn apart. Though forests are a resource for these businesses, they are also a resource for our survival. This process of destruction, slash and burn, needs to come to a stop. It is causing damage such as soil erosion, extinction, global warming and more.
The tropical rainforest is the most productive biome on the planet. Trees make up seventy percent of the plants. (Seivert) The soil however, is thin, poor, and has little organic matter. The rainforest’s stable climate, tropical latitude, and long growing season make it a perfect habitat for many animals and plants. In fact, over half of all terrestrial animals make it their home.
