Understanding Muscular Dystrophy

When I was a junior in high school I began volunteering for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. I did not know exactly what muscular dystrophy was; all I knew was that it was a neuromuscular disease and that it affected muscles. I did not know what muscles or who it affected. When I became a camp counselor for kids with muscular dystrophy I learned so much more about the disease. I learned exactly what muscular dystrophy is, what causes it, that there are nine major types of MD, and I also learned about the treatments for muscular dystrophy.
Muscular Dystrophy is a group of hereditary diseases caused by a defect in certain genes. Muscular Dystrophy causes voluntary muscles to gradually weaken and in some cases it can be fatal.
