Uncle Charles (Character of 'Closer' in Dreamstuff - David Malouf)

In Closer, Malouf deals with acceptance of being different in society through Uncle Charles, who is ostracised by his family for being homosexual. Uncle Charles is a great contrast against his brothers, Matt and James, who embody the idea of a typical, animal type male ("They are big men with hands swollen and scabbed from the work they do, and burnt necks and faces, and feet with toenails grey from sloshing around in rubber boots in the bails", "Uncle James and Uncle Matt are hairy men like Esau, they are shaggy").
