Thomas French tells the story of a fascinating rape murder, but he also gives us a factual based account of how it affects so many people. Although I knew from the beginning that the neighbor “did it” the way the story was laid out on the pages of the book it kept me wondering till the end.

Because the murder was in a town just north of us I could relate to the visual clues given. The houses are like houses only blocks from my home. The transient nature of neighbors, some living just a few months here, a few months “back home” cause people to be less connected. Those who heard the last cry of Karen Gregory must have had a difficult time dealing with her death for a very long time after the event. The thought that they could have possibly saved her life by calling the police or helped catch her killer must haunt them to this day.
