In 1956 and 1966, clearly with Japanese agreement, the United States kept nuclear weapons and in later years nuclear bombs without their fissile cores on Chichi-jima, about 500 miles southeast of the Japanese mainland. They also kept them on Iwo Jima, about 670 miles southeast of Tokyo.
