Socrates the Philosopher
Socrates is considered one of the first philosophers and is well known for his way of teaching and his trial. Socrates was born in 399 B.C. near Athens. He was the son of Sophroniscus, a sculptor. Technique
Socrates was an Athenian who used a unique style of teaching. Instead of answering questions, he restated them in a different way to help his students find the answer themselves. This method of teaching is rarely used today but is gaining popularity. The best source of information about Socrates, are early dialogues of a student named Plato, who wrote about the teachings of his master. “Because Socrates never wrote anything himself, historians know about the man and his philosophy only from the writings of others. The best sources of information are the works of his most famous student, Plato” Plato was still a young man when Socrates died. He went on to start a school of his own in Athens.
