We must first take a moment and ask ourselves “what was Cordelia’s motive?” Was she hiding an evil side from society, or was she a goody goody who did no wrong? In the beginning of the play, Cordelia’s father plans on dividing his kingdom among his three daughters. Unlike her Sisters, Cordelia stayed true to herself and kept her loyalty to her father. Cordelia was a quiet girl. But why did Cordelia not follow the practice of possession and inheritance? Why did she refuse to give the speech that everyone was expecting her to give? Did she really have respect for her father’s possession? Cordelia’s actions in act one question her character.
