The definition of friend is a person whom one knows, likes, and trusts.
The definition of betray is to be false or disloyal. We have all heard and used the expression “friends stab you in the back.” Oscar Wilde took the same expression and put a new spin on it. “True friends stab you in the front.” What does he mean by true friends? What are the characteristics of a true friend and how are they different from a friend?
Wilde is trying to convey to his readers that there is a distinct difference between a friend and, a true friend. “True friends stab in you the front.” The nature of a true friend as Wilde describes is some one who is willing to allow you to be hurt without interfering and then offering their shoulder to cry on. Sometimes all a true friend can do is to help them get past the pain. A true friend will also step help his or her friend realize and reach their dream or goal.
