True Destiny

“The Necklace”, by Guy de Maupassant, is a story of a young, married, poor woman,

Mathilde Loisel, that feels she is meant to be something more than a lowly housewife.

The disappointment of her life is best expressed when she referred to being born into a

“family of clerks” as “a mistake of destiny”. She yearns and dreams of being like the

wealthy women she sees full of jewels and fancy dresses, feeling this is what makes a

lady, a real lady and for her that was her destiny in life.

The reader can sense her selfishness and snootiness when her husband gets tickets to a

ball and she insists on a new dress, knowing the money wasn’t easily earned. It doesn’t

come as a shock to the reader when the new dress isn’t enough to satisfy her c...
