Doing what you think is better isn’t always best. In the play Fences, by August Wilson, the character Troy is always striving for something better. The results weren’t what he expected. When Troy gets bored of his marriage he tries to find excitement in an affair but ends up being left by his wife. He tries to protect his son Cory from doing what he loves best, football. Which just pushes his son further away from him. He also gets a promotion as the first colored driver, which interferes with the relationship he has with his best friend Bono. Troy’s need for better things in life lead to his isolation.
In the beginning of the play Troy and his wife Rose are happily married, until Troy confesses to an affair. To make things worse, Alberta, his mistress, is pregnant. “I can’t give it up” (pg. 69) is what he says to Rose, “she gives me… an understanding about myself… I can just be a part of myself that I ain’t never been.” (pg.69) He likes going to ...
