Treatment of women in classic literature

Women have been treated different from men since the beginning of time. In the bible a woman is described as being created so that man would have a mate and would not be alone. Throughout time women have been viewed as a lesser being than men, in one way or another. While stories have been told of women receiving less respect and not having rightful opinions, there have also been many stories of women with servants, with men bowing and tending to all desires. Either way, the treatment of women has become a big part of readings and something definite to consider when reading early literature from around the world. From the beginning of time up until the writings of today, the treatment of women is often an issue in many of the stories we read.
