Trail of Unexpected Tragedy

It was a brisk July morning when Jack Byrd first heard the news of the Klondike. The thought of it was in his head for many weeks after. Finally, three weeks later, he told his wife, Anita, about his plans.
“Just think about it, Anita.” Jack said to her with a firm voice, “Just think about how rich we could get.”
“Could, that’s what’s stopping me,” Anita replied, “Are you actually willing to quit your job, drop everything and go to a place you’ve only heard about in rumors?”
“Anita... please, just go with me on this.” Jack said with a calm voice.
“Alright” replied Anita with a look of despair.

It was two days later; Jack had quit his job, bought two steamboat tickets to Dyea, Alaska, and bought and packed enough food for a year. It was August 3rd at 11:30am when they boarded an old steamboat named “Elly Mae”. Here is where they met their first piece of bad luck.
