Tragedy of Hamlet

In William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, Prince Hamlet himself repeatedly causes those surrounding him to suffer. Shakespeare uses this characteristic of Hamlet to greatly contribute to the tragic vision of the play as a whole.
Tragedy, by definition of Aristotle, isn’t the case in a normal car accident or even a large scale terror attack. Rather, such is the case in Hamlet. Prince Hamlet’s indecisiveness and violent behavior ultimately results in his downfall, yet the consequences he endures as a result of these traits are much worse than would be ‘fair.’ Although his death is the ultimate punishment, by the end of the play Hamlet has developed tremendously as a person and discovered answers to many of his questions about life.
