Tragedy: A disastrous, distressing or unfortunate incident or event. The definition of a tragedy must be found in context with the time that said play was written. The Devil's Discipleis a modern day play written by George Bernard Shaw, so for a modern definition, a modern source was used. The definition that was used was not one of Shakespeare or Aristotle, but one of the Internet. The definition was found on a website called Merrium - Webster online dictionary. The definition that was found fits nicely into The Devil's Disciple.

The Devil's Disciple contained many characters that had tragic events happen to them. In the first pages of the play many characters are introduced including Essie, who is a young girl who is quite poor. Her father has just been hung by the army to poove a point against rebels. This fits the definition of tragedy exactly because it was quite an unfortunate event for a little girl to lose her father in such a violent way...
