What is a tornado? Many people, even today, don’t know what a tornado is. A tornado is a big violent rotating column of air. They are violent storms that whirl around. It looks like a funnel of air that goes around in circles. Tornadoes are nature’s most dangerous storms. They destroy everything in its path. These funnel shaped clouds are very big, violent, and destructive. However they don’t last long. Some people compare a tornado to a giant vacuum cleaner. Low pressure inside the tornado acts like a giant vacuum cleaner and sucks up the air around it as well as anything that it passes over. They are also known as tropical cyclones.
A tornado is formed when the warm air from the Gulf meets with the cold Canadian air from the Rockies. Many thunderstorms are formed under those conditions.
