Tooth Decay and America

Health, fitness and hygiene have always been major issues in America. People do all different kinds of things to stay healthy. They join the gym, do different exercises and also pay regular visits to the doctor. They are also concerned about their teeth. Most people teach their children from a very young age to keep clean teeth and brush them regularly. Americans, in Drakulic’s opinion, are “obsessed by their teeth.” They pay a lot of money to the dentist to keep them clean shiny and perfect.

People would pay any price to get their teeth to look nice. In “On Bad Teeth”, Slavenka Drakulic gives the example of a friend who took her son to the dentist to get his teeth fixed. She spent almost $3000 on the braces for her son. Drakulic tries to explain that even though dental care is so expensive in America and no insurance covers its expenses, people still visit the dentists regularly.
