Both these stories rely on humour for their effect. As they are only ten and four pages long respectively, they take on the nature of anecdotes. An anecdote is a short narrative of an incident. Its particular characteristic is that the story line is simple.
Both these stories make use of a narrator who knows the people involved - one who says (or implies) at the beginning of the tale that he is going to tell a story about incidents which he is very familiar with - which he then does.
