Tone of "Design"

“Design” is an appropriate word for the title of this particular poem, as are all of the words used throughout. The descriptive diction plays an important part in generating the feeling that something or someone of a sinister nature is ruling over the doom of all. For example, the line, “Like ingredients of a witches’ broth”, helps to spawn a feeling of evil, while at the same time upholding the main theme of grand design. After all, the ingredients for a witches’ brew are carefully selected. Another supporting line, “Assorted characters of death and blight”, gives the poem a chilling, malevolent air. This is important, as most readers would assume that God governs over all. However, “Design” suggests that not good, but evil reigns over all, as shown by the two aforementioned lines.
