Buffy Sainte-Marie wrote this song from her views of the United States and how it is two-faced. Her anger toward the United States is shown with her attitude and tone. The refrain “My country ‘tis of thy people you’re dying,” shows anaphora, which emphasizes her tone and thought throughout her song.
In the first stanza, Buffy’s attitude toward the United States is anger; she tells the reader how blind the United States was and how they finally realized what they had done. In Buffy’s song, she uses apposition in the first stanza, “You’ve asked for my comment I simply will render:” Her explanation for her “comment” is the refrain “My country ‘tis of thy people you’re dying.” Buffy used imagery such as, “Now that your big eyes have finally opened,” she compares the “big eyes” to the United States, and how it finally realized what it has caused to the Indians and people.
