To what extent can Macbeth be held accountable for his actions.

In the year 1606, James I of England ruled supremely. He was King of England and King of Scotland as Elizabeth of England had died childless. With his brother-in-law, King Christian of Denmark, visiting he entertained him like any good king would. He hired the best dramatist of the time, William Shakespeare, to produce a play that would invigorate and intrigue both him and his visitor. Shakespeare named the play 'Macbeth'. Macbeth was a play 'fit for a king'. It was a play written for a king, about a king and performed for a king.
Macbeth deals with many issues, for example, ambition, loyalty, betrayal, violence, tyranny, guilt, and witchcraft.
It was known that King James was an avid believer in witches and of their ability to ruin crops and predict the future.
