To kill a mockingbird

A novel’s themes, symbols, and motifs are what the entire story is based upon. The theme in To Kill a Mockingbird is based upon characters being good or evil. Harper Lee uses symbols such as the Mad Dog, the Radley tree, the Mockingbird, and many more to help express this message.
Symbols are objects, characters, figures, or colors used to represent abstract ideas or concepts. Here Lee uses Atticus’ actions as a symbol to help the reader have a better look upon the racism in the 1930’s. Adam Smykowski believes that Lee uses the Mad Dog to help illustrate the idea that racism, which spreads through the south, is like a sick dog spreading its disease. People are greatly affected by how another acts, and what another does. If a person discriminates against a group of people it is likely that the people closest to them will also come to look at that person’s opinion in the same way.
