To Kill a Mockingbird- Summary

Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in the fictional but typical Southern town of Maycomb, Alabama between 1932 and 1935. The story deals with many different aspects like gender roles, growing up, social codes and attitudes and prejudices to blacks. The novel is narrated by Jean Louise Finch (nicknamed Scout) remembering a special period of her childhood. At this time she lives with her elder brother Jeremy Atticus (Jem) Finch, her widowed father Atticus Finch and their black cook and caretaker Calpurnia. Maycomb is suffering through the Great Depression, but Atticus, being a prominent and successful lawyer, and his family are reasonably well off in comparison to the rest of society. One summer the children befriend a boy called Charles Baker (Dill) Harris, who lives in their neighbourhood for the summer.
