To Kill a Mockingbird is a sad novel, which could only be expected from themes as dejected as discrimination. As the novel progressed it involved the reader in Tom Robinson’s case, on a personal level, and once the jury convicted Tom guilty it made the reader realise that society is not only discriminatory but also unjust. The outcome of Tom Robinson’s court case was tragic, but as Atticus was going to appeal it, it assured the readers. Harper Lee uses Tom’s later death to shatter the reader’s presumptions that there are other people to do the job that nobody else wants to do. Which forces...
