Characterisation
One of the chief attractions of this novel is its wide range of lively characters. To analyse each one separately would take a very long time, but fortunately the nature of Maycomb society makes this unnecessary. Maycomb County is a small community, and has been isolated in the years following the Civil War. Social patterns have remained static, and the society is divided into clearly defined groups. Family loyalties are specially intense; when Aunt Alexandra is trying to instill family pride into the children she 'never let a chance escape her to point out the shortcomings of other tribal groups to the greater glory of our own' (chap 13).
