To Kill A Mocking Bird

People fear the mysterious, that which they do not understand. Lee is able to capture this feeling through her use of language, which creates a mood that is an alloy of gloom, darkness and mystery.

Lee’s use of imagery and other figurative language entrances the reader by capturing the essence of the feared Radley house. This house is described to us as having a morose and sickly ambiance that “oak tress kept the sun away.” Lee describes the house as having “misery” and “the color of slate-gray around it.” The dismay of the house is evident when Lee mentions the “rain-rooted shingles drooped over the veranda.” The mood further develops with Lee’s...
