Time and setting a detail to come"A Rose For Emily"

William Faulkner is the author of the short story, “A Rose For Emily,” published in 1930. The story is set in the deep South, Jefferson, to be precise. Emily Grierson is the lead character of the story. Miss Emily is raised in the antebellum period after the civil war. The story is concentrated in the reconstruction era after the war, during Miss Emily’s adult life. Faulkner uses the elements of time to enhance details of the setting. By avoiding the chronological order of events in Miss Emily’s life, Faulkner first gives the reader a finished puzzle, and then allows the reader to examine the puzzle piece by piece, or step by step. Faulkner, arranges the story in fractured time and then introduces characters who contribute to the development of Miss Emily’s personality and life.
The story starts out with, “When Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to her funeral.” (443) They talk of the house and the details of the setting and of a fallen monume...
