Three Ordinary Men:One Extraordinary Woman

A male dominated society has covered the landscape of history since biblical times. So much so that, even in a society in which a majority of women work paying jobs, salary discrepancies and unequal job consideration are the norm. Compared to the days when voting and working were out of the question however, women in modern society are more highly respected than ever before. In happens each day, slowly but surely the gender gap is closing tighter. Ibsen’s A Doll House transcends the early 20th century mold of a women’s role in society through the main character Nora. The male characters are stuck in 1900, while Nora, to the shock of Ibsen’s contemporaries struggled as if in the year 2000. The three main male characters in A Doll House are all flawed in some way—Krogstad the supposed villain, Helmer the suppressive husband, and Dr. Rank the lustful friend to Nora—but each through sporadic good behavior is able to blur our negative perception of them.
