Three Gorges Dam

The Three Gorges Dam, at 185m (607 feet) high and over 2 km (1.3 miles) across, creating a reservoir 500 km (310 miles) long and displacing at least 1.24 million people, is probably the biggest event in the history of the Yangtze. It will forever change the course and nature of the river and will function in flood control, power generation, and navigation. Construction of the dam began in September of 1994. The Three Gorges Dam will become partially operational in 2003.
