Thoreau, “Civil Disobedience”

In his writing, the Civil Disobedience, Thoreau opposes a government that is run in an unjust manner and explains the responsibilities of a citizen living in such a state. First of all, in order to judge injustice, not only should individuals use their own conscience, but also know that there is a higher law above the state laws, which should be the main thing to be abided by everyone, since it is based on moral values. He believes that government is essential for convenience, but it shouldn’t be involved in making choices on moral issues. Once someone realizes that the state is unjust by using his own conscience and the moral law, he should know that his duty is not to try to eradicate any wrongs, but rather to not participate in anything relating to that government.
He accepts the fact that one might gain a lot of other opportunities and avoid unpleasant situations by abiding the rules of the state, but he loses his soul by participating in an unjust government. Tho...
