- Themes

• Lack of education - This is showed in the story when the principal character (Guy) is reading the lines of his son. He is having trouble reading the lines that his son already knows as he tells in the story. This was expressed when he told that “All these words seem so long and heavy” and when the author tell us that he struggles reading the letters of the play (top of page 55).
• Freedom - This theme is represented in the role of the child in the play. He is playing a revolutionary hero that helps his people. This theme acts as a premonition of the revolution in Haiti.
• Poverty - The author let us know that the family in the story ...
