Their Eyese Were Watching God

Janie Crawford the protagonist of the novel, returns home after being away for a very long time. The people from her town, particularly the women, are petty and unfriendly, they gossip about Janie and how she was too young to have married Tea Cake. Janie's best friend, Phoeby, is angry at the women and leaves their company to take some supper to Janie. Janie tells Phoeby that she should inform the community about her whereabouts for the past years to end the mean gossip. Janie refuses, she tells Phoeby to tell her story to the community on her behalf. Then Janie begins her tale.
Janie tells Phoeby that she is wealthy, with nine hundred dollars in the bank. Tea Cake was a nice husband, but he has recently died. She lived with him in the Everglades and now she's come back. She tells Phoeby that they have been best friends for twenty years and that she relies on her as a friend. Janie begins telling the story of her life. She never knew her mother or father, and is raised by her grandmot...
